an idea is planted

In the heart of Bijaya Khadka, a seed of compassion was sown. Born and raised in a Bhutanese Refugee camp in Nepal for nearly 18 years, he intimately understood the plight of those facing economic and social vulnerability. Upon moving to the United States and settling in Rochester, NY in 2009, a new chapter unfolded. Witnessing the challenges faced by his community, Bijaya's resolve strengthened. His experiences fueled a deep-seated desire to empower others, instilling in them a sense of dignity, value, and purpose.

An idea grows

With each passing day, Bijaya Khadka's commitment to his community blossomed. In the early months of 2010, he began extending a helping hand to new arrivals and victims of hate crimes. A pivotal moment arrived on New Year's Day 2015, when Bijaya led a youth group to meet with residents of a homeless encampment nestled beneath the Douglass-Anthony Bridge in downtown Rochester. Despite the biting cold, the group distributed food and clothing, offering warmth and comfort to those in need. The positive response from the community served as a resounding affirmation of Bijaya's mission. Guided by the belief, "God comforts us when we have trouble so that we can comfort others with that same comfort," his resolve to make a difference only deepened.

An idea bears fruit

From the fertile soil of compassion and community support, the House of Refuge USA emerged in 2015. Nurtured by the contributions of compassionate friends, dedicated family members, and supportive community organizations, this initiative quietly but steadfastly extended its reach. Unencumbered by the complexities often associated with larger organizations, the House of Refuge USA has become a beacon of hope. With love as its guiding force, it continues to embrace and uplift those who might otherwise be overlooked, enriching lives and fostering a sense of belonging within the community.
